The Waterloo-Wellington Science & Engineering Fair has prepared numerous resources for fair exhibitors to start, execute and complete their projects. Are You Doing Human or Animal Studies?

NOTE: The information in our Regulations, Forms, etc. is based on Youth Science Canada Policy.

Do not begin any project involving humans or animals until you are familiar with the ethics rules.

There are three paths that you can take:

  1. Using Humans with Low Risk. (Projects involving Humans with Low Risk need to be approved by your Adult Advisor before you begin your project.)

  2. Using Humans with Significant Risk.

  3. Using Vertebrate Animals or Cephalopods.

All projects involving Humans with Significant Risk and Vertebrate Animals or Cephalopods need to have approval from the WWSEF Ethics Chair before you begin the project.

NOTE: Lower orders of life such as plants, bacteria, protozoa, insects, and invertebrates can be used without ethics approval.

If you would like to proceed with research involving human and/or animal subjects, you must read the regulations and forms and decide which is applicable. After reading the Regulations, Research Plans, and Forms, if you have any questions, email the WWSEF Ethics Chair (ethics@wwsef.ca)

When you have all of your documents ready according to the instructions, email them to the Ethics Chair for review. The Ethics Chair will get back to you as soon as possible.

Looking for More Information as a Teacher / Parent / Supervisor?

So far we have discussed all of the details pertaining to the actual project for the fair. But none of these projects would be possible without adult supervision from either a teacher, parent or guardian.
